Alignment and Neutrality

By Greg Finch

I recently got a question about Sciatic Nerve issues a surfer was experiencing. Wanted to write here as nerve based pain is a common issue I hear about. If you are experiencing nerve based pain start with the concept of neutral I dig into below.

Nerve pain (Neck, sciatic, back, shoulder) have a particular physical reaction (overreaction almost) that is best addressed through consistent alignment work.

That alignment which also includes mobility and breathing allows for the body and mind to release tension surrounding the source of the pain.

You've probably experienced that frightening "grab" before. This reaction to the nerve impulse or information immediately being sent back from an area and the reaction is an instantaneous contraction of muscles surrounding the source.

The alignment work and resulting tension or muscle release puts us back in a place to progress.

Neutrality or the ability to "begin again" if you will. Don't try to address the underlying issues causing pain until you are in a place free of as much tension, inflammation, and unnecessary muscle contraction that is the mind and bodies attempt to protect a given area of perceived vulnerability.

Check out Static Back as a great place to start and end your day with the idea of alignment and neutrality

My stamina and paddling are really improved and that allows me to surf longer and stronger

I've noticed a big difference in really two main things. One is my pre-surf warm up gets my body loose and ready to surf. I feel like I'm not step-tripping over to myself as much. Doing those dumb falls that just waste a bunch of waves.

Second my stamina and paddling are really improved and that allows me to surf longer and stronger.

My surfing has improved on so many different levels working with Greg. I have developed much more confidence in the water. I feel more comfortable & strong out there. I can paddle longer, pop-up faster, and turn with more power.

It really gave me direction of what to do to get my body feeling better. Some of those aches and pains I would get after a sesh aren't there anymore. I could see my body becoming much more reliable for me because of the exercises and techniques that were taught.

The personal service was awesome! Greg was very knowledgeable and easy to reach whenever. If I ever had a question he was there to help quickly.
