Surfing in your 40s, 50s, and beyond isn’t about chasing the same lines we drew as teenagers. It’s about surfing smarter. It’s about preparing our bodies so they can meet the waves with strength, fluidity, and resilience — no matter what decade we’re in.
One of the biggest limiters I see with surfers in this age bracket? Tight hips.
I’ve coached enough surfers to recognize the pattern: the stiffer the hips, the harder the pop-up, the shorter the sessions, and the more wear and tear ends up dumped into the knees and lower back.
But here’s the truth: it doesn’t have to be this way.
The Hip Connection: Why Mobility Makes or Breaks Surf Longevity
Your hips are the hinge of your surfing body. They connect paddle power with board control. Every pop-up, every cutback, every cross-step starts with hip mobility.
When the hips are locked up:
- Takeoffs slow down. You can’t pull your knees under your chest with speed.
- Turns stiffen. Lacking rotation, your torso compensates and your timing suffers.
- The back and knees take the hit. Pain becomes the tax you pay for ignoring mobility.
The tragedy is that most surfers don’t even realize this decline is optional. They chalk up slower pop-ups or stiff transitions to “just getting older.” But age isn’t the enemy here. Neglect is.
The Drill: 90/90 Hip Switch → Shin Box
This is one of my go-to movements for unlocking hip tightness. It’s deceptively simple, but it rewires how your hips move.
How to Do It
- Set up in a 90/90 position.
- Front leg bent at 90°, foot flat.
- Back leg bent at 90°, shin along the ground.
- Switch. Rotate both legs through the center into the opposite 90/90.
- Add the Shin Box sit-up. From the new position, drive your hips tall, opening the front hip and lengthening the spine.
- Repeat. Flow back and forth with control.
📌 Protocol: 3 rounds of 60 seconds.
The Payoff: What You’ll Notice in the Lineup
Stick with this drill consistently and here’s what shifts in your surfing:
- Pop-ups feel smoother. Less grind, more glide.
- Transitions speed up. From drop-in to bottom turn, your body responds without hesitation.
- Sessions last longer. Less stiffness means more waves before fatigue or pain sets in.
- Your style opens up. Instead of fighting against your body, you flow with it.
Common Mistakes Surfers Make with Hip Work
Even when surfers start addressing mobility, I see the same pitfalls again and again:
- Rushing the movement. Mobility isn’t about speed — it’s about control. Move slow enough to feel the restriction.
- Skipping consistency. Doing hip work once a week won’t undo years of stiffness. A few minutes before or after every surf session adds up.
- Focusing only on stretching. Static stretches have their place, but surfers need dynamic mobility — movements that carry over directly into takeoffs and turns.
A Story From the Water
One of my clients — mid-50s, lifelong surfer — came to me frustrated. He was still catching waves but struggling with the pop-up. Stiff, slow, always a half-second behind. After just a few weeks of hip-focused mobility, he texted me:
“Pop-ups are back. I feel ten years younger out there.”
That’s the payoff. It’s not just looser hips — it’s the freedom to surf like yourself again.
Surf Longevity in Action
Skipping hip work is like skipping wax on your board. You might get away with it for a bit, but eventually it costs you waves.
The 90/90 Hip Opener → Shin Box is just one tool, but it’s powerful because it blends strength, control, and mobility in the ranges surfers rely on most.
Do this consistently, and you’re not just fixing today’s stiffness. You’re investing in decades of surfing ahead.
